Homework
We believe that homework should support learning and help children to understand the concepts being covered in class.
Homework is set for all pupils. Parents are expected to read with their children every dayand ensure that other homework is completed on time.
Homework should never be too onerous nor should it ever create stress within the pupil’s family. If parents/carers have any concerns they should not hesitate to contact the school. In Key Stages 1 and 2, topic homework is set at the start of each half term and due dates are given and weekly homework is set to ensure that pupils have an appropriate amount of time to complete the tasks set
The following are government recommendations as appropriate time allocations for homework activities:
Years 1 and 2 – 1 hour per week
Years 3 and 4 – 1.5 hours per week
Years 5 and 6 – 30 minutes per day
In Key Stage One and Key Stage Two, children will be set a project to complete and they will be given guidelines in order to support them to do this (see below). They will also be expected to complete daily reading activities and to learn spellings/rules of grammar and/or mathematical facts
Teachers may provide games or worksheets to assist children to learn these facts but they will not be given out on a regular basis as the expectation that reading/spelling and mathematical learning should be independent, fun and suited to the individual’s learning style.
Homework activities will change to meet the needs of pupils involved and activities that might be occurring in school or in class. All homework tasks and activities well have a clear purpose and assist pupils in the process of their academic development.
Listed below, for each phase of education, are a number of example tasks that may be given to support the mathematical, grammatical, spelling or English development task:
Homework Tasks
Foundation Stage
o Reading books with adult support
o Counting up and down
o Reciting nursery and counting rhymes
o Identification of shapes
o Refinement of mathematical concepts through games and other activities
o Letter and rhyme of the week
o Fastening and unfastening buttons and zips and tying shoelaces
o Finding out about things by asking questions
Key Stage 1 (Year 1 and 2)
o Daily reading
o Homework project that reinforces literacy skills (as well as skills and understanding in other curriculum areas)
o Spellings
o Learning grammatical rules
o Numeracy activities – learning mental mathematical facts, possibly using games to support understanding
o Real life problems, for example working out change at the shops.
Lower Key Stage 2 (Year 3 and 4)
o Daily reading
o Homework project that reinforces literacy skills (as well as skills and understanding in other curriculum areas)
o Spellings
o Learning grammatical rules
o Numeracy activities – learning mental mathematical facts, possibly using games to support understanding
Lower Key Stage 3 (Year 3 and 4)
o Reading
o Reading aloud to an adult on a regular basis
o Homework project that reinforces literacy skills (as well as skills and understanding in other curriculum areas)
o Spellings
o Learning grammatical rules
o “Talk homework” that involves discussing the focus for a future piece of writing
o Handwriting practice
o Reading comprehension activities
o Planning pieces of writing
Children that receive extra tuition and support or booster classes may be asked to complete extra homework related t the support that they are given. If you require any further information, please speak to the teacher concerned.
